Local government leadership is key to development 28 March 2007

Tanzanian Prime Minister Hon Edward Lowasssa and Commonwealth Secretary General Rt Hon Don McKinnon were among the keynote speakers at the opening plenary of the Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2007.

  • Democracy and strong leadership in local government are vital for developing communities said Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon. He said that for most people in the Commonwealth, local government is the first contact with the authorities, and as such deserve to be strengthened and adequately funded by the central government.
  • The relationship between local and central government should be clearly stated and citizens must have a voice through their own democratically elected institutions said Prime Minister Lowassa. He said that cotrol and ownership of local resources is key for local leadership.

Powhiri ceremony welcomes delegates 27 March 2007

The offical opening of the Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2007 started with a traditional Maori powhiri ceremony. More than 600 delegates were seated in the auditorium for a traditional Maori welcome,  where a New Zealand welcome group, including the Ngati Whatua, greeted a delegation led by CLGF Chair Hon Mayor Robert Montague to the conference.

Auckland hosts 600 Commonwealth local government experts 14 March 2007
More than 600 leading experts, opinion formers and practitioners in local government from all corners of the Commonwealth will meet in Auckland, New Zealand in ten days time for the Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2007.  Heads of government, ministers with responsibility for local government, local government mayors, city leaders and councillors, private sector representatives and civil society representatives are attending the fourth Commonwealth Local Governemnt Conference, which will take place at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, New Zealand’s city of sails, from 26-29 March.
